Consecration Sunday Is Coming
Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes.
Our congregation’s Stewardship Committee has selected the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year.
New Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?”
During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we are asking our attendees and members to make their financial commitments to our church’s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community and around the world.
Every attendee and member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending morning worship on Consecration Sunday. We urge people to attend who feel strongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card.
We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worship our guest leader will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship.
We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events through the Consecration Sunday team and governing board members. Since we will make no follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship.
Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events.

PEACEMAKING OFFERING, October 4, 2009
The congregations of Mission Presbytery respond generously and graciously to the denomination’s Peacemaking Offering, received by most churches on World Communion Sunday (Oct 4, this year). Churches retain 25% of this offering for peacemaking uses within their congregations, another 25% is used by the presbytery, and 50% is funneled on to General Assembly in support of the denomination’s peacemaking program. {The San Antonio Department of Peace Movement, supporting HR 808, is part of the Presbyterian Peace Program.}
This year the Presbytery’s portion will be used to inform and educate members of our presbytery on the issue of immigration.

2009 Theme:
“End Family Violence: A Call to Action”
In other countries, people struggle for justice using a process of seeing,
judging and acting. In Spanish we say ver, juzgar, actuar. This
process has been an anchor in the P.E.A.C.E. Initiative’s work to
end family violence. The last of these steps is where San Antonio
finds itself at this time in our evolution. We’ve witnessed the family
struggle to survive against violence. The family violence crime data
has been revealed. We have acknowledged the problem of family
violence is serious in our community. The time is now to act!

Solidarity Sunday, 5:30 pm at MSPC – October 4
A Brief History of Solidarity Sunday
Solidarity Sunday is the non-violence project of Dignity-USA. It was established in 1995 to help break the chain of violence against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (glbt) persons. It is celebrated annually on the Sunday before October 11 (National Coming Out Day). It's an interfaith service that includes sharing from a variety of faith perspectives and remembering those who have violently lost their lives because they were gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered. A potluck reception and time for fellowship conclude the celebration.
Since its beginning, Solidarity Sunday has been observed by more than 1,000,000 people across the United States: through churches (including Baptists, Episcopalians, Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists Presbyterians, Unitarians); organizations (including Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), The National Association of Gay and Lesbian Journalists); colleges, universities and high schools. Many churches and organization devote Solidarity Weekend to presentations, discussions, group study, etc., to try to understand the serious threat posed by violence, and to work to create solutions.

As many of us are aware, the illegal practice of forced childhood marriage and FGM (female genital mutilation) is still practiced in many parts of the world. One group making inroads to help girls caught in this cycle is the Tasaru Girls Rescue Centre in Narok, Kenya. The Centre provides a safehouse and education for the girls through secondary school, but what happens next?
Global Relief Resources has established a scholarship fund to help the girls become self-sufficient. This fund provides the girls with education and job training that enables them to not only provide a sustainable income for their family and their community, but to also be a role model for other Massai girls. (Please see Mary Walker's Blog at marywalkerkenya.blogspot.com to learn more.)
One hundred percent of what you donate goes directly to the girls.
Please join us on October 10th."
